To be honest I felt a little disappointed in The City of Shadows. The first few pages were beautifully written with an enticing lyrical quality which then seemed to disappear. I then felt that it was just a bit slow, with the initial excitement then being ignored until about 100 pages in. This could be something to do with my ignorance about Irish political history, but I felt that exploration of that took over from the gripping nature of a mystery story.
